A Volkswagen Passat carrying five young men travelled the wrong way on the motorway near Middlesbrough in the early hours before colliding with a marked police car. Officers had been chasing the vehicle for almost seven minutes after linking it to earlier alleged criminal activity. The pursuit was abandoned ten seconds before the crash when the Passat turned onto the dual carriageway, according to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
Funding Boost and Resource Allocation
The Home Secretary announced an additional £2 million for Cleveland Police to address the fallout from the crash. Two hundred officers from other forces have been drafted in to support the response. Chief Constable Fuller said the funding is essential and expressed hope that it will help the force become a “big, strategic force” capable of surging when required.
Operational Challenges for Cleveland Police
Cleveland Police serves an area with the highest recorded crime rate in England and Wales for the year to March, according to Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures. The force also ranks highest for burglary, sexual offences, violence with injury, and criminal damage and arson. Recent inspections label it one of the most improved forces, yet it has suffered the largest decrease in officer numbers since 2010 and is staffed as if it were a rural force. The force’s Labour police and crime commissioner has previously called for an extra £20 million a year to hire more officers and combat organised crime.
