Historical Context

After ESA and France secured a joint launch programme in 1973, Arianespace was created in 1980 to market the Ariane family. Development of Ariane 5 began in 1985 and its first successful flight on 30 October 1997 delivered two commercial satellites, a capability that later yielded 82 straight successes (2003-2017) and underpins new ventures such as Isar Aerospace’s ESA-backed Spectrum rocket.
