Deployment Overview
On 5 September 2025, HMS Queen Elizabeth is scheduled to leave Portsmouth Naval Base at about 18:20 BST for a three-month deployment around the United Kingdom and northern Europe.
Recent Refitting and Capabilities
The vessel has just completed its first major refit since commissioning in 2017. The multi-phase upkeep, which began in November 2024, included significant propulsion upgrades and an eight-month dry-dock period at Rosyth. The 65,000-tonne, £3.2 billion warship now carries a crew of more than 800 sailors and is being prepared to replace HMS Prince of Wales as the UK’s flagship and high-readiness strike carrier in late 2027. The Defence Investment Plan has earmarked £240 million for a hybrid carrier air wing, including jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicles to operate alongside F-35B Lightning fighters.
Training and NATO Exercises
Before operational deployment, the carrier will undergo intensive training under the Fleet Operational Standards and Training (FOST) organisation, covering aviation, carrier operations and naval warfare. An embarked battle staff will practice commanding an Allied naval force and integrating ships and aircraft from other NATO nations. The carrier, together with Type 45 destroyer HMS Dauntless, may take part in Exercise Atlantic Thunder 2026—a joint sinking exercise with the U.S. Navy scheduled for mid-September 2026 off Scotland.
Strategic Significance and Future Plans
Assigning HMS Queen Elizabeth as NATO’s command ship marks the first time either of the UK’s carriers has held the role, signalling a deeper integration of British naval power within Alliance operations. The upcoming deployment and training are intended to maintain high-readiness strike capabilities while the Royal Navy finalises plans for the hybrid air wing and the transition to HMS Prince of Wales as the next flagship.
