Boris entered the museum’s collection in 1932 as part of a large bequest from a local game hunter and has become an unofficial mascot of the institution. The bear’s historic status offers a rare, well-preserved source of brown-bear hair that can be compared with modern samples from regions where the species persists, such as Romania, Bulgaria and Russia.

Project Development

Leigh initially contacted roughly 30 zoos and museums seeking access to comparable specimens. The Museum of Chelmsford agreed to lend Boris’s hair after these outreach efforts. Leigh notes that “hundreds of studies” have focused on domestic-animal hair, prompting his decision to target a wider impact on wildlife-crime investigations.

Anticipated Impact on Wildlife Crime Investigations

By establishing detailed microscopic and genetic reference data from Boris, the research could enable forensic analysts to more reliably match hair evidence to brown bears, distinguishing them from other large mammals. Improved species identification may strengthen prosecutions of illegal poaching and support conservation enforcement in the bear’s native range.

Future Directions

Leigh’s work is part of a broader push to expand forensic reference libraries for endangered wildlife. Continued collaboration with museums and zoological institutions is expected to supply additional historic specimens, further enhancing the scientific basis for combating illegal wildlife trade.
