SpaceX lifted off a Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 4 East at Vandenberg Space Force Base on a Sunday morning during the Labor Day weekend. The vehicle carried 27 Starlink internet satellites to low-Earth orbit, deploying them on schedule about an hour after liftoff. The launch was the 80th Starlink mission of the year and the 103rd Falcon 9 flight in 2026, with eight-y of those dedicated to expanding the megaconstellation.
Booster B1088 Reuse Milestones
The first stage was the booster designated B1088, completing its 19th flight. After delivering the payload, the booster performed a controlled descent and landed on the Pacific-based drone ship *Of Course I Still Love You* roughly 8½ minutes after launch. The landing marked the 223rd successful touchdown on that vessel and the 659th Falcon 9 booster landing overall, underscoring SpaceX’s high-flight-rate reuse strategy.
Transition to Starship for Florida Starlink Flights
SpaceX has shifted all future Florida-based Starlink launches to its forthcoming Starship system. Kiko Dontchev, Vice President for Launch at SpaceX, explained the policy change:

Current Scale of the Starlink Constellation
According to astronomer and satellite tracker Jonathan McDowell, the Starlink network now includes more than 11,000 active spacecraft, making it the largest satellite constellation ever assembled. The Vandenberg launch adds to the constellation’s coverage and capacity, reinforcing SpaceX’s goal of global broadband service.
Outlook and Upcoming Tests
SpaceX’s next steps involve finalizing Starship flight-readiness for the Florida launch site and continuing to reuse Falcon 9 boosters like B1088 for additional missions. Hazard warnings suggest that the inaugural Florida Starship flight could occur no earlier than mid-September, pending final regulatory clearance.
