Bill Belichick’s UNC Football Program Under Investigation as GM Michael Lombardi Resigns

University investigators hired by the University of North Carolina (UNC) are questioning individuals connected to the football program about alleged drug use by defensive coordinator Steve Belichick and possible sexual relationships involving recruiting and coaching staff. The probe also examines the overall culture of the program under head coach Bill Belichick, who was hired in December 2024 on a five-year, $50 million contract. UNC has not provided further comment since the investigation was launched.

Mars added that the inquiry was also looking into “inappropriate relationships” beyond Lombardi, a matter Lombardi himself was not aware of or responsible for monitoring. UNC’s brief statement said the investigation would continue and that the university would consider appropriate corrective actions.

Belichick’s contract obligates him to comply with UNC, NCAA, and ACC policies, to promote an atmosphere of compliance, and to maintain institutional control over assistant coaches and staff. The agreement stipulates that if UNC terminates Belichick without cause, the university must pay him through the end of his contract; termination for cause would relieve the university of further salary obligations. Lombardi’s contract similarly required adherence to university policies, though a provision allowing him to avoid repayment of his contract’s termination fee was triggered by his resignation.
