In 1948 the New York International Airport, known as Idlewild, opened to relieve LaGuardia. After President Kennedy’s assassination, Mayor Wagner renamed it John F. Kennedy International Airport on December 24 1963, establishing a model for commemorative airport names. Governor Bill Lee’s 2024 proposal to rename Nashville’s airport for Dolly Parton follows that same naming-for-celebrity tradition.
