Historical Context

Israel’s artillery strike on Zawtar al-Gharbiyah echoes the 34-day 2006 Lebanon War that began on 12 July 2006 when Hezbollah ambushed Israeli soldiers. That conflict killed over 1,200 Lebanese civilians, injured roughly 4,000, and prompted the deployment of 15,000 Lebanese troops and about 12,000 UNIFIL peacekeepers under UN Resolution 1701. The pattern of border clashes and civilian displacement therefore repeats a long-standing cycle.
