Historical Context

China’s WTO entry on 1 December 2001 removed trade barriers and, as a WTO member since 1995, Hong Kong became the main conduit for mainland capital. Building on that integration, Financial Secretary Paul Chan’s ‘Go Global’ plan seeks to list Belt-and-Road firms on the Hong Kong exchange, aiming to channel billions of new bond financing.
