Historical Context

On August 7 1998 al-Qaeda detonated truck bombs at the U.S. embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, killing 224 people and wounding thousands. The attacks followed bin Laden’s February 1998 fatwa calling for attacks on U.S. interests and spurred President Bill Clinton to order Operation Infinite Reach, cruise-missile strikes on al-Qaeda camps in Afghanistan and a Sudanese pharmaceutical plant on August 20 1998.
