Artist’s Intent and Creation Process
The piece was created by Dudley-based artist Dion Kitson, who first posted the work on Instagram. Kitson designs murals on cloth before adhering them to walls with a strong adhesive, a method he uses to ensure durability. He described Bellingham and Rogers as “two star boys” from the “heart of the Black Country,” celebrating their local roots. Kitson has previously painted football-related murals, including a 10-foot portrait of former England and West Bromwich Albion manager Sam Allardyce that appeared in Dudley a year earlier.
Cultural Significance of Orange Chips
Orange chips are a Black Country specialty, traditionally battered with turmeric or paprika to achieve their vivid colour. By portraying the players eating this regional snack, the mural linked national football icons to a beloved local food tradition, reinforcing community pride in the West Midlands.
