Conflicting Rainfall Figures
Two official sources reported different totals for the same period. The Strait Times cited 381 millimetres (15 inches) of rain recorded through 5:20 a.m., while Nippon reported 485 millimetres measured up to 9:40 a.m., describing it as the highest on record for Niijima. Both figures underscore the unprecedented intensity of the event.
Expanded Alerts Across Eastern Japan
In addition to Niijima, the JMA placed a Level 4 landslide alert on parts of Chiba and Saitama prefectures, neighboring Tokyo, and central Fukushima. The agency also warned of flooding in low-lying areas and rising river levels in seven regions—Tokyo, Saitama, Kanagawa, Chiba, Shizuoka, Aichi and Mie—citing the combined influence of a seasonal rain system and Typhoon Krovanh (also spelled Crovanh).
Agency Response and Public Guidance
Takuya Hosomi, director of the JMA’s Forecast Division, addressed a press conference, urging residents to move away from cliffs and ravines and to follow local emergency instructions. The government established a liaison headquarters at the prime minister’s office to coordinate damage assessment and streamline emergency response efforts.
Anticipated Weather Outlook
Meteorologists warned that warm, moist air from Typhoon Krovanh will continue to feed the frontal rain band stretching along Honshu’s Pacific coast. Additional rainfall is expected in the coming days, prompting officials to maintain high alert status for landslides and related hazards across the affected regions.
