Historical Context

On 18 April 1988, the U.S. Navy launched Operation Praying Mantis, destroying two Iranian frigates, two oil platforms and other vessels in retaliation for the mine that crippled USS Samuel B. Roberts. The strike helped push Iran toward a cease-fire in the Iran-Iraq War and set a precedent for U.S. naval pressure that underlies today’s Gulf restricted-zone declaration and tanker threats.
