Russian-Linked Allegations Cloud Sweden’s Election and Potential Coalition

Ahead of the September general election, the Sweden Democrats—a far-right party poised to join Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson’s government—are facing accusations that a party official, Polina Malaberg, promoted pro-Kremlin narratives for a decade and facilitated contacts with a Russian state-backed group. The claims, first detailed by the non-governmental watchdog Expo, also allege that Malaberg’s partner, Gustav Gellerbrant, a senior civil servant who heads the party’s Coordination Office in the coalition, may have security-clearance concerns. The controversy has intensified calls for transparency as the Sweden Democrats could enter government for the first time.

The centre-left Social Democratic Party, led by former prime minister Magdalena Andersson, currently leads the polls and argues that the alleged Russian ties pose a “security crisis.” If Andersson wins, she would join other centre-left leaders such as Spain’s Pedro Sánchez at the European table. Kristersson has signaled that the Sweden Democrats would receive ministerial posts, including potentially the foreign-affairs and EU portfolios, while also pledging tougher gang-crime measures and expanded deportations. Andersson has criticised the Sweden Democrats’ stance on migration, warning that proposals to strip permanent residency cross a line.

Sweden Democrats leader Jimmie Åkesson said the party was unaware of Malaberg’s posts, pledged an internal investigation, and indicated she would be removed if she continued to espouse pro-Russian views. Andersson, speaking from her parliamentary office, questioned when the prime-ministerial office first learned of the issue and what information has been shared, framing the matter as a threat to national security.
