Historical Context

In August 2017 monsoon floods killed 143 Nepalis and affected 1.7 million people, highlighting Nepal’s vulnerability to extreme rains. On 26 September 2024 the region recorded its heaviest rainfall since 1970, causing floods that have killed at least 224, damaged dozens of bridges and highways, and prompted President Ram Chandra Paudel to launch nationwide rescue and shelter operations.
