Historical Context

Operation Opera on 7 June 1981 destroyed Iraq’s Osirak reactor, which the IAEA said would generate 10 MW of electricity and require about 70 metric tons of uranium. The raid created the Begin Doctrine of pre-emptive strikes, a policy later used in September 2007 when Israeli jets hit a Syrian reactor in Deir al-Zor. These attacks have driven Israel’s counter-proliferation stance and heightened IAEA monitoring.
