Kang Shichang, director of the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, attributes the primary driver of this loss to global warming.

The same research notes that more than 14,000 glacial lakes now dot the plateau, covering over 1,100 km² and continuing to expand quickly. Near China’s southern borders, the lake area is growing at an average of 1 % per year, according to researcher Nie Yong of the same institute. The increase in lake number and size heightens the likelihood of glacial-lake outburst floods, landslides and related hazards.

Because many of the expanding lakes lie close to the Himalayas that feed rivers flowing into India and Nepal, the heightened flood risk could have significant downstream impacts.
