Student Involvement and Naming
The observation was made by a team of students participating in the Project Hokulani internship, which provides access to the Gemini North facility. The group included participants from Waiakea High School and the Volcano School of Arts and Sciences. Samantha Silva-Sampaio, a student from Waiakea High School, explained that the term “‘Uhane” (spirit) reflects the inspirational experience of stargazing and learning on Maunakea, while “Huki Pu” describes the physical pull between the galaxies and “i ke Ola” conveys the idea that such interactions can spark new star formation and potentially foster life elsewhere. Her fellow discoverer, Manu Silva-Sampaio, emphasized that the image illustrates the blend of scientific observation and spiritual meaning.
