Assault Outside Sacramento’s Badlands Nightclub Raises Safety Concerns in Lavender Heights
9/8/2026, 1:30:28 PM
Incident Overview
Early Monday morning, police responded to reports of an assault in the 2000 block of K Street, just after 2:45 a.m., outside Badlands, a popular LGBTQ+ nightclub in Sacramento’s Lavender Heights district. Two women were attacked after the club had closed; they sustained minor injuries. Officers have not confirmed whether the assault was motivated by bias.
Recent Pattern of Violence
The attack follows a series of incidents targeting LGBTQ+ patrons in the area. A week earlier, a man named Joseph Sais reported being attacked by four men shouting homophobic slurs near 20th and L streets. Earlier reports also cite an October assault on Andy Cortez, which left him with broken teeth, and a Halloween 2025 assault on Alvin Prasad that resulted in his death and a subsequent involuntary manslaughter charge with a hate-crime enhancement. The Midtown Association has announced plans for “Safe Space” training for businesses later this year and increased lighting along K Street.
Badlands’ Official Response
Badlands’ Director of Operations Brian Aranda issued a statement emphasizing the club’s cooperation with law enforcement and heightened security measures.
- “We are actively cooperating with law enforcement and have provided investigators with the available surveillance video.” — Operations Brian Aranda
- “Our personnel saw the altercation unfold, and management and staff responded immediately to intervene,” — Operations Brian Aranda
Aranda added that staff intervened immediately, called 911, and remained with the victims until police arrived. The venue is increasing security presence, reviewing additional safety protocols, and will provide guards to escort guests to their vehicles upon request.
Police Investigation Status
Sacramento police have not made any arrests related to the Monday assault. The department is reviewing surveillance footage supplied by Badlands and continues to assess whether bias played a role.
Community Impact and Ongoing Safety Efforts
The incident occurred shortly after the conclusion of Sunday’s Rainbow Festival, an event that featured heightened security due to prior attacks in the Midtown district. Community members, including Sais, expressed shock that violence could occur in a space intended for queer celebration. Local officials and business groups are focusing on improved lighting, security training, and visible patrols to address safety concerns in Lavender Heights.
