New Lead in the 1995 “Baby April” Murder Investigation

Kent Police have released a computer-generated image of a woman seen visiting the grave of “Baby April” at Bybrook Cemetery in June. The woman, described as a white individual in her 40s, about 5 ft 7 in tall, with a medium-slim build, pale complexion, grey shoulder-length hair, and wearing a grey cardigan, trainers and black leggings, appeared distressed. Detectives hope she may possess information that could advance the unsolved murder inquiry.

On April 3, 1995, a newborn’s body was discovered in a Motaworld carrier bag at Singleton Lake, Ashford, Kent. The infant, estimated to have been born between 25 March and 3 April 1995, weighed roughly 7 lb. An autopsy concluded death by asphyxiation, likely caused by strangulation with a pair of tights. The child was wrapped in a Kleenex tissue bag with paper placed in her mouth and was subsequently buried as “Baby April” in Bybrook Cemetery.

Operation Duke, the original investigation, examined 3,858 individuals, including hundreds of teenage girls absent from school at the time of the birth. The case was reopened in March 2011 when the body was exhumed to obtain a full DNA profile; the new sample did not yield a breakthrough. A renewed public appeal was issued on the 30th anniversary of the discovery, accompanied by the CGI image of the mystery visitor.
