Tesla originally employed rare-earth-free AC induction motors before adopting permanent-magnet motors for the Model 3 in 2017, a change that improved performance but increased reliance on rare-earth supplies.

David Zhang, general secretary of the Shanghai-based International Intelligent Vehicle Engineering Association, characterized Tesla’s new motor as largely a “commercial concept” and cautioned that its efficiency and performance compared with conventional permanent-magnet motors remain unproven.
