Store Closures and Net-Store Count
Retailer Genesco Inc., the Nashville-based parent of Journeys, Johnston & Murphy and U.K.-based Schuh, announced the closure of 25 underperforming stores during its second quarter of fiscal 2027. The reductions, led by Journeys (17 stores), Schuh (six stores) and Johnston & Murphy (two stores), were offset by three new openings, leaving the company with a net total of 1,186 locations—a 5 % decline in retail space compared with the same period a year earlier.
Rationale and Margin Effects
Genesco says the smaller footprint is a deliberate operational pivot aimed at cutting overhead and improving profitability. Management cited the closures, reduced promotional discounting and license transitions as intentional moves that sacrificed top-line revenue to secure healthier margins. Net sales fell 3 % to $530 million, but adjusted gross margins expanded 140 basis points to 47.2 % as a result of the pull-back on price cuts and the reduced store count.
Brand-Level Sales Performance
Despite the overall sales dip, the flagship Journeys brand posted a 2 % increase in comparable sales, marking its eighth consecutive quarter of growth. Johnston & Murphy saw comparable sales rise 4 % in the same period, indicating that the remaining stores are delivering stronger performance.
Balance-Sheet Cleanup and Cost-Saving Initiatives
Genesco also reports a significant balance-sheet improvement, cutting total debt from $71 million a year ago to $15.8 million. The company is pursuing a company-wide efficiency program that includes store remodeling, automation and AI integration, projected to save between $40 million and $50 million through fiscal 2029.
Outlook for Investors
With back-to-school demand boosting Journeys’ sales in August, Genesco raised its full-year adjusted earnings guidance to the high end of its $2 to $2.40 per share range. The retailer frames the 25-store reduction as a tactical trim that exchanges size for a leaner, higher-margin operation, positioning the company for sustained profitability.
