Historical Context

The FAA certified the first EMAS in the mid-1990s, and a 2008 Airbus A320 stop on O’Hare’s EMAS showed its effectiveness. Those successes led many constrained airports to install EMAS, but Miami International still lacks one, contributing to the recent Amazon cargo jet overrun. As of September 2024 the FAA reports EMAS at 121 runway ends in 71 U.S. airports.
