Fatal Shooting Ends Highway 50 Pursuit in Sacramento County

Around 11:20 p.m. Monday, California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers stopped a vehicle with its headlights off on Folsom Boulevard. The driver initially complied but then fled, prompting a multi-agency pursuit through Rancho Cordova and Fair Oaks. Spike strips were deployed on Highway 50 near Hazel Avenue, stopping the vehicle at approximately 12:05 a.m. Tuesday. When the driver exited the car, officers observed what appeared to be a gun in the driver’s hand. Officers from CHP, the Citrus Heights Police Department, and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office opened fire, striking the driver. First responders provided aid, but the driver later died at a hospital. The driver’s identity has not been released, and it remains unclear whether a weapon was recovered.
