Historical Context

After a Delta Boeing 737 overran Chicago O’Hare’s runway 4L in 1999, the FAA funded a $2.5 million EMAS installation that later stopped 15 overruns at more than 100 U.S. sites. The 1999 incident spurred EMAS adoption at Midway and LaGuardia, and now pressures Miami International to install the system before 21 Air’s 2026 Boeing 767-300 overrun.
