Spain’s Ministry of Digital Transformation and Civil Service has agreed to become the sole sponsor of the San Sebastián Film Festival’s industry events. In addition, the prize for the best Spanish project at the Zinemaldia Startup Challenge will be increased to €30,000.
Background of the Spain Audiovisual Hub Initiative
The support builds on the Spain Audiovisual Hub of Europe plan launched in 2021, which allocated €1.6 billion from the EU’s Next Generation EU recovery fund. The first phase of the plan focused on tax incentives and credit facilities for the audiovisual sector. The current funding forms part of the plan’s second phase, aimed at strengthening the country’s position as a European hub for film, television, video-game and emerging-technology production.
Financial Details of the Support
Beyond the €500,000 festival grant, the Ministry’s investment arm, the Spanish Society for Technological Transformation (SETT), has deployed roughly €215 million into Spain’s film, TV, video-game and technology industries. This public investment has attracted an estimated €230 million of matching private-sector capital. Industry attendance at the festival reached a record 2,411 delegates last year, underscoring the event’s growing market relevance.

Spanish Minister for Digital Transformation Oscar López said the commitment reinforces infrastructure that is strategic for the Spanish audiovisual world, highlighting the festival’s ability to attract investment, create opportunities and connect talent with international financing. Festival director José Luis Rebordinos noted that the sponsorship will further boost activities such as Zinemaldia, the technology showcase, and the Creative Investors’ Conference, which gathers leading international audiovisual executives.
