Jim Geoghan, Creator of “The Suite Life,” Dies at 79

Jim Geoghan, the television writer and producer best known for co-creating the Disney Channel sitcom *The Suite Life of Zack & Cody*, died in Los Angeles in September at the age of 79. His daughter, Genevieve Geoghan, confirmed the news to Variety. Geoghan’s work on the series, which followed twin brothers played by Cole and Dylan Sprouse navigating life in a hotel, helped launch the careers of several young actors, including Ashley Tisdale and Brenda Song. The original series ran from 2005 to 2008 before evolving into *The Suite Life on Deck*, which continued the story through 2011.

Beyond the *Suite Life* franchise, Geoghan wrote for a range of classic sitcoms such as *Silver Spoons*, *The Facts of Life*, *Boys Will Be Boys*, and *The Van Dyke Show*. His work on *The Suite Life of Zack & Cody* earned two Emmy nominations for Outstanding Children’s Program in 2007 and 2008, underscoring his impact on early-2000s children’s television.

Before his television career, Geoghan pursued comedy on the New York circuit. In 1973 he joined the improv trio Divided We Stand, performing regularly at venues like the Improv Comedy Club, The Bitter End, and Catch A Rising Star while touring colleges nationwide. He later transitioned to playwriting; his off-Broadway comedy *Only Kidding* logged roughly 500 performances, and his drama *Light Sensitive* premiered at San Diego’s Old Globe Theater and has been produced in more than 40 U.S. theatres.

Geoghan moved to Los Angeles with his wife, actress Annie, after securing his first television writing job. Outside of entertainment, he enjoyed photography, model-boat building, and crafting. Colleagues remembered him for his “joyous personality, kindness and humor.” He is survived by his wife and daughter.
