On 13 August 1961 the GDR, urged by Walter Ulbricht and backed by Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, sealed East Berlin with barbed-wire and concrete, creating a 155-km “Anti-Fascist Protection Rampart.” The barrier halted the flow of roughly 3.5 million East Germans who had fled since 1949, and over 100,000 attempted escape, shaping NATO’s Cold-War posture for decades.
