Around 8,200 Michigan residents who applied for or renewed an enhanced driver’s license or state ID received cards with a generic stock photo and an incorrect date of birth. The error was traced to a batch printed in late August, and the faulty cards were mailed to recipients earlier this week.
Cause and Vendor Involvement
The Michigan Department of State identified its contract vendor, Idemia, as the source of the misprints. Idemia, a global provider that designs secure identification documents for governments in more than 180 countries, printed the affected credentials with placeholder information instead of the individual cardholder’s details.
Department of State’s Response
State officials announced that corrected cards have already been mailed to all affected individuals. They emphasized that no action is required from recipients; the new cards will arrive automatically. In the interim, the department advised customers to obtain a temporary license or ID online or at a Secretary of State office. Residents who still possess a non-expired prior license or ID may continue to use it for travel.
Impact on Residents
The misprinted cards contain only generic data and do not expose personal information belonging to other Michigan residents. Because the error does not affect the validity of existing, unexpired documents, travel and identification functions remain uninterrupted for most holders while they await the replacement cards.
