Historical Context

In May 1948, David Ben-Gurion’s provisional government declared Israeli independence as the Arab-Israeli war expelled roughly 750,000 Palestinians and the United Nations later recorded the destruction of about 5,000 villages. Israel’s defence minister Israel Katz now proposes moving Gaza’s civilian population, a plan condemned by the United Nations, Egypt, Jordan and the Arab League as a revival of the 1948 displacement.
