Historical Context

After Poland received its first Leopard 2A4 tanks from Germany in 2002, it launched a domestic-foreign upgrade effort that began in 2012. A 2015 contract between the Polish Armaments Group and Rheinmetall to modernise 128 tanks cost 2.415 billion zl and delivered the first Leopard 2PL in May 2020; by December 2024, 76 upgraded tanks had entered service.
