On September 7, rider Matthew Skrzypczak posted a video showing the Cybercab’s central touchscreen displaying a square-shaped virtual joystick with forward, reverse, stop, horn and door-control buttons. The interface appeared on the left side of the screen while a live-camera view occupied the right side, though the camera feed was frozen on a previous Supercharger location. Skrzypczak noted that the configuration was unexpected for a vehicle marketed without any steering wheel or pedals and attempted to drive the car using the on-screen controls.

How the Joystick Is Intended to Function

According to observations from multiple riders, the joystick is designed for low-speed maneuvers such as nudging a parked Cybercab out of a tight spot. Tesla has not publicly demonstrated the mode, but the layout suggests it is meant for depot workers or employees who need to reposition the robotaxi without contacting a remote operator. The Verge reports that the controls could also allow law-enforcement or emergency responders to move the vehicle if necessary, though it is unclear whether local police were briefed on this capability.

Regulatory Scrutiny and Official Comments

Tesla launched the Cybercab in Austin on September 3, the same day the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an audit to examine how the vehicle met federal safety standards despite lacking a steering wheel, pedals or mirrors. NHTSA’s audit covers roughly 1,000 Cybercabs. In response to regulatory concerns, Tesla chair Robin Denholm said the company could add a steering wheel and pedals if required, indicating that the hidden joystick is a fallback rather than a primary control system.

Industry Reaction and Remaining Concerns

Commentators note that a touchscreen joystick is impractical for real-time human takeover, describing it as an inadequate answer to regulators’ core question: how a driverless car can be safely controlled by a human when needed. The presence of the hidden interface highlights a gap between Tesla’s claim of “full autonomy” and the practical requirements for manual intervention, especially as the robotaxi service has yet to scale beyond its initial deployment of Model Y-based vehicles.
