Opening in Seoul Marks Chipotle’s First Asian Joint-Venture Store
On the morning of September 2, Chipotle Mexican Grill served its inaugural bowl in Asia at 423 Gangnam-daero, Seoul. The launch generated lines that stretched past the subway exit and sparked viral social-media jokes about waiting three hours for a bowl. The restaurant is the first Chipotle outlet opened through a joint venture, partnering with South Korean food company Sangmidang Holdings.
Joint-Venture Structure and Supply-Chain Build-Out
The partnership operates under S&C Restaurants Holdings, in which Big Bite Company—an affiliate of Sangmidang—holds a 51 % stake and Chipotle retains 49 %. Sangmidang, which previously introduced Shake Shack to South Korea, supplies local farms and vendors already vetted for quality, and leverages SPC’s sourcing and processing infrastructure to meet Chipotle’s global food standards. Two additional Korean sites are slated for opening before the end of 2026, using the same supply-chain model.
Scale of Chipotle’s Global Footprint
Chipotle celebrated its 4,000th restaurant in Manhattan, Kansas, in December 2025. At the close of the first quarter of 2026, the company reported 3,983 U.S. locations and 107 international units. Management outlined plans to open 350–370 new restaurants in 2026, including 10–15 partner-operated international sites.
Official Outlook on Asian Expansion
- “Korea is important because we're not simply opening restaurants — we're building a model for how Chipotle can enter and ultimately scale in a new region while protecting what makes the brand special,” — Nate Lawton, Chipotle's chief business development officer — Nate Lawton, Chipotle's chief business development officer
- “Singapore is a natural next step for Chipotle in Asia,” — Nate Lawton, Chipotle's chief business development officer — Nate Lawton, Chipotle's chief business development officer
Lawton emphasized that Korea serves as a test case for building a repeatable, scalable model across the region, and described Singapore as the “natural next step” for the brand’s Asian growth.
Future Steps: Singapore and Additional Korean Sites
Chipotle’s joint-venture partner indicated a target window of the first half of 2027 for a Singapore launch, though exact location and timing remain undecided. The company has not disclosed plans for further Asian markets, stating its priority is to execute successfully in South Korea and Singapore before expanding elsewhere.
