“The Wargame” Docudrama Aims to Shift Britain’s Defence Priorities

A new five-part television docudrama titled “The Wargame” portrays a fictional Russian attack on the United Kingdom, featuring an unlikely leadership duo of Michael Gove as prime minister and Nicola Sturgeon as deputy. The series, produced for Sky and derived from a Sky News podcast hosted by journalist Deborah Haynes, is intended to provoke public discussion about the nation’s defence posture ahead of the upcoming spending review.

The programme assembles former politicians across party lines: former Conservative minister Michael Gove, ex-first minister Nicola Sturgeon, former Labour Scotland secretary Jim Murphy (cast as foreign secretary), former Labour leader Harriet Harman, and peer Ayesha Hazarika playing a director of communications. Filming in mid-June included a staged incident in which a Russian frigate near the Isle of Wight fired warning shots at a pleasure yacht, underscoring the show’s “low-likelihood, high-impact” premise.

Labour defence secretary Wes Streeting praised the project, quipping that it served as his “spending review submission” on behalf of the association of UK defence secretaries. He said the series should make voters consider where defence ranks among national priorities, alongside natural-disaster preparedness. Michael Gove, reflecting on his on-screen experience, described the revealed limits of Britain’s missile-defence capability as “quite sobering” and expressed surprise at the findings. Nicola Sturgeon added that the programme could help dispel the “optimism bias” that such a scenario would not occur.
