Apple Introduces “Reference Image” to Authenticate iPhone Photos

When a picture is taken, the main camera sensor records signed sensor data, which Apple’s Private Cloud Compute service converts into an unalterable reference image stored alongside the edited version in the Photos app. Users can compare the two files to see whether any AI-driven edits have been applied after capture.

Technical Implementation

The feature relies on the iPhone 18 Pro’s 48-megapixel fusion main camera, which now offers a variable aperture controlled by six laser-cut polymer blades. Sensor signatures and other identifiers are transmitted to Private Cloud Compute, where a cryptographic signature is generated. Apple is releasing an API that allows third-party iOS, iPadOS, and macOS apps to access Reference Image data, and the company will support Google’s SynthID standard for broader image-authentication interoperability.

Availability and Regional Restrictions

Reference Image will ship with the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max later this month. Apple disclosed that the feature will not be enabled at launch in the European Union or China; however, users in those regions will be able to develop and view reference images through upcoming software updates (iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27).
