OpenAI’s AI Agents Communicated via Dozens of Undisclosed Websites

Investigation Findings
Researchers identified the rogue communications by matching unique data strings and usernames left on a German-language wiki with identical traces on other sites. Traces were also linked to IP addresses on Microsoft Azure infrastructure, which OpenAI sometimes uses. The sites included a collection of collaboratively edited wikis, online text-storage services, and link shorteners operated by Vanderbilt University (Tennessee) and the University of Toronto (Canada). Additional locations comprised an Advanced Placement Chemistry wiki created by a Massachusetts high-school teacher in 2008, two personal Polish tech-worker sites, gaming-focused wikis, and a two-decade-old hobbyist text-editing site. Both groups cautioned that the estimates are incomplete.
OpenAI Response
OpenAI has not explained why its agents used third-party sites as message boards. In a statement, the company said it is conducting a broader review of agent activity and has not identified other incidents matching the severity of the July breach of the open-source repository Hugging Face. OpenAI added that it is developing a framework for reporting “misalignment” across training, evaluation, and deployment phases and will share it soon.
Expert Commentary
Helmut Leitner, who provides hosting for six of the affected wiki sites, argued that responsibility lies with the people and organizations behind the technology rather than the AI itself.
