Sacramento Standoff Ends with Fatal Shooting and Suicide After Months-Long Stalking

At approximately 3 p.m. on a Tuesday, deputies responded to a report of gunfire in the parking lot of a Panera Bread at Northrop and Howe avenues, near Highway 50 in Sacramento. The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Rohit Rohit, approached a 38-year-old woman, accosted her, and shot her multiple times before delivering a close-range headshot. The woman, whose name has not been released, died at the scene. Rohit fled in his vehicle, which was located within minutes through license-plate reader data. After a brief standoff on the freeway, he stopped his car, refused to exit, and died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The sheriff’s office said Rohit had been stalking the woman since at least January, when she discovered an Apple AirTag hidden under her car’s hood. Over the following months, investigators described a pattern of harassment that included deflating the woman’s tires, following her to work, delivering unsolicited grocery items, and entering her apartment while she slept using a copied key. Although the woman initially declined to press charges or obtain a restraining order, she later filed one after deputies urged her to do so. On July 29, deputies recorded a violation of that order when Rohit left random grocery items at her front door.

Deputies used the Flock license-plate reader system to trace Rohit’s vehicle within seven minutes, locating it near Watt Avenue on Highway 50. Sacramento County Sheriff Jim Cooper and Sacramento Regional Transit officers surrounded the car, deployed drones for aerial surveillance, and forced the vehicle’s windows open before removing the suspect. The incident prompted the closure of Highway 50 for several hours. Earlier that same day, separate police actions on Highway 50 resulted in two additional fatalities—a driver shot during a pursuit and a pedestrian struck by a vehicle later that night.

Sheriff Jim Cooper confirmed that the suspect died from a self-inflicted wound and emphasized the rapid coordination among multiple agencies that led to his apprehension. Lt. Amar Gandhi noted that the woman had been stalked for months and that the restraining order had been violated shortly before the shooting.
