NFL Eyes Permanent Overseas Teams Amid Growing International Schedule

9/10/2026, 9:54:03 AM

Expanding the Global Game Schedule

The league’s current season features nine regular-season matchups staged in Australia, Brazil, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Germany and Mexico—the most international games ever scheduled. League officials have also floated the idea of relocating one or more franchises to a foreign market on a permanent basis.

Agents Warn of Competitive Disadvantages

A collective of 24 player agents, speaking anonymously to NFL writer Ben Standig, cautioned that permanent overseas clubs would face “an automatic disadvantage.” The agents also highlighted free-agency dynamics, asserting that overseas teams would likely lose the tiebreaker when a player chooses between comparable offers and would therefore have to overpay to attract talent.

Potential Upside: Talent Pool and Market Growth

Despite the concerns, the agents acknowledged that an international footprint could broaden the talent pool. The broader exposure is also seen as a way to boost revenue and grow the sport’s popularity worldwide.

Investment and Logistical Hurdles

These factors compound the competitive challenges identified above.

Outlook

While the league continues to schedule more international games and discuss permanent relocation, the agents’ feedback underscores significant recruitment, financial and operational obstacles that must be addressed before a foreign-based franchise can become a viable, competitive part of the NFL landscape.
