Historical Context

In August 1983 Thames Television aired the one-off drama “Woodentop”, written by Geoff McQueen, which impressed ITV and led to the full series “The Bill” debuting on 16 October 1984. The programme ran for 26 years, delivering 2,425 episodes and cementing ITV’s reputation for gritty police procedurals.
