In 1987 archaeologist Walter Alva uncovered Sipán’s intact Lord of Sipán tomb, a 3-meter-high platform holding 28 individuals and more than 200 gold pieces that reshaped Moche studies. Echoing that find, Jorge Meneses Bartra’s team at Chan Chan revealed a 17-meter-square, five-meter-high funerary platform with 38 bodies, prompting Peru’s Ministry of Culture to prioritize protection against looting.
