Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced a plan to build a mass-transit system for Bristol, with Mayor Helen Godwin earmarking £150 million for a five-year programme.
The initiative is presented as creating green jobs and expanding accessible transport for underserved communities.
The 29-train fleet will generate about 350 jobs at Alstom’s Derby plant and support roughly 6,000 jobs nationwide.
Battery-electric trains will run emission-free and feature step-free boarding and wheelchair spaces.

Historical Context

In the early 1980s the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive identified a light-rail system as the cheapest way to link the region’s fragmented rail network. Parliament approved the scheme with the 1988 Light Rapid Transit Acts, and construction began in March 1990. The Metrolink opened its first passenger service on 6 April 1992, establishing the UK’s first modern tram network.
