Historical Context

After the Soviet Union’s collapse, Russia remained North Korea’s chief trade partner—about 60 % of Pyongyang’s trade in 1988—using the Khasan-Rason border. On 1 Feb 2025 Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin approved a road bridge, and by April 2026 Governor Oleg Kozhemyako said the linked bridge would cut the Vladivostok-Rason route to 320 km, boosting freight flow.
