IRCTC Sets Record Single-Day Ticket Bookings Amid Festive-Season Surge

By Drooid · · How we work

Record Single-Day Booking on September 7 2026

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) reported 20,06,353 railway tickets booked on September 7 2026, the highest single-day total ever recorded. The next day saw 19,50,699 bookings. These peaks occurred during the advance reservation period (ARP) for the festive season, when demand traditionally spikes.

System Upgrades and Capacity Expansion

In the months before the September surge, IRCTC overhauled its Next Generation e-Ticketing (NGeT) platform. New servers replaced older hardware, effectively doubling system capacity. Software optimisation and architectural changes further increased the ability to handle concurrent requests. A beta version of a redesigned user interface launched on July 15 2026, consolidating class-wise seat availability on a single screen.

To curb automated misuse, IRCTC introduced anti-bot technology that lowered malicious bot traffic by roughly 55 %–65 %. A Content Delivery Network now serves static content, reducing load on the core NGeT system. The corporation deactivated 3.04 crore user IDs, placed 6.33 crore under revalidation, blocked 16,041 suspicious email domains and lodged 592 cyber-crime complaints covering about 4.21 lakh suspicious PNRs.

Distribution Channels and Third-Party Platforms

IRCTC Chairman and Managing Director Rahul Himalian disclosed that 28 % of online railway ticket bookings flow through third-party platforms such as Paytm, MakeMyTrip, ixigo and ConfirmTkt. Of the remaining online sales, 53 % occur via the IRCTC Rail Connect mobile app, 17 % through the IRCTC website, and roughly 2 % via government-arranged channels. Daily online ticket volumes range from 18 lakh to 19 lakh, with about 14.88 lakh to 15 lakh booked online.

Usage Patterns and Booking Behaviour

IRCTC officials note that approximately 89 % of all reserved railway tickets are now booked online. During each ARP opening, the platform handles between 1.33 crore and 1.74 crore logins and processes 17 lakh to 20 lakh bookings. Booking activity is front-loaded: 8.43 %–14.14 % of a day’s total bookings occur in the first hour (8 am–9 am), with the first 15 minutes (8:00–8:15 am) consistently recording the highest concurrent demand. Over 85 % of bookings are completed later in the day. Authorized ticketing agents are barred from booking ARP tickets during the initial 10 minutes (8:00–8:10 am). Since October 12 2025, only Aadhaar-authenticated users may book tickets during the opening window.

Official Statements & Responses

An IRCTC official emphasized that the September surge demonstrated the platform’s resilience, noting that despite exceptionally high concurrent demand, no failure or outage was reported.
