Police in Malkajgiri arrested a former military officer who had retired two months earlier after investigators linked him to the disappearance of 12 firearms and more than 1,800 rounds of ammunition from the 20 Madras Regiment premises in Bolarum, Secunderabad Cantonment. The officer was taken into custody on September 11, and during questioning he allegedly identified two to three additional individuals whose involvement is being verified. Police have not confirmed whether any of the stolen arms have been recovered.
Multi-Agency Investigation
The missing cache was first noticed on August 31 when personnel opened the Kote and Battalion Magazine and found broken locks and storage boxes. A complaint filed by a lieutenant colonel of the Madras Regiment prompted the registration of a case at Bollarum police station. Official sources said the probe involves the Army, Military Intelligence, Telangana police and the National Investigation Agency, and that an internal army inquiry has been launched to determine how the weapons were lost.
Weapons Stolen and Estimated Value
The inventory taken includes four AK-203 assault rifles, one INSAS 1B1 rifle, six 9 mm Auto 1A pistols, a civilian 6.35-bore pistol, a passive night-vision binocular, 21 magazines and ammunition sufficient for the weapons. Police estimates place the total value of the stolen items at roughly INR15 lakh.
Ongoing Leads and Next Steps
Investigators are examining the role of the additional persons named by the detained officer and continue to search for the missing equipment. Both the police and army officials have indicated that the investigation remains active, with no public timeline for recovery or further arrests.
