New Seamless Password-Manager Switching on Android

Google rolled out a new password-manager switching experience for Android devices. The feature lets users move all stored passwords—and passkeys—directly from one manager app to another without exporting CSV files. Users start the process in the new manager, select “import or copy passwords,” and Android automatically detects the existing manager, coordinates the transfer, and presents a summary for user approval in a few taps.

How the Feature Works

When a user opens a supported password-manager app, Android scans the device for other manager apps and initiates a secure hand-off. The system transfers both traditional passwords and modern passkeys, eliminating the need to re-register passkeys after migration. The transfer is limited to devices running Android 8 or later, and Google’s own password manager already includes the capability. Current partner apps include Bitwarden, 1Password, and Dashlane, with additional managers slated for future support.

Background: From CSV Files to Direct Transfers

Previously, Android users who wanted to change password managers had to export their credentials to a CSV file, manually import the file into the new app, and risk exposing sensitive data during the process. Google’s new approach removes the CSV step, reducing the chance of data leakage and simplifying the migration workflow. The company highlighted that the direct transfer also preserves passkeys, which otherwise would require users to set them up again in the new manager.

Official Statements & Future Availability

Google indicated that the switching experience is already live for select partner apps and its own password manager, and it will be rolled out to all compatible Android devices. The firm noted that expanding support to additional password-manager apps is forthcoming, aiming to make the feature universally available across the Android ecosystem.
