Historical Context

In June 2006 Hamas militants captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, sparking Operation Summer Rains and a five-year diplomatic deadlock. On 18 October 2011 Israel, under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, swapped Shalit for 1,027 Palestinian detainees, including future Hamas commander Farah Hamed. On 10 September 2026 the IDF, Shin Bet and the Gideonim unit killed Hamed in Gaza, echoing the earlier reliance on targeted-kill operations.
