Historical Context

Decades of discontent began with the Shah’s 1976 austerity and the costly 1971 Persepolis celebration, then intensified when oil-strike workers halted 4.8 million barrels a day in late 1978, crippling the regime. The February 1979 overthrow of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi by Ayatollah Khomeini created an Islamic Republic whose early price controls still echo today’s Tehran protests over wages and soaring drug costs.
