The Department for Transport (DfT) has confirmed that a fleet of battery-electric trains will be introduced on TransPennine Express services. The trains will operate on routes linking Liverpool Lime Street with Scarborough, Manchester Airport with Saltburn, and Manchester Piccadilly with Hull. The DfT says the new rolling stock is intended to help the Transpennine Route Upgrade achieve its target of a 30 % capacity increase, adding thousands of seats each day. Journey times are projected to be reduced by up to ten minutes between Manchester and Leeds and by up to fourteen minutes between Manchester and York.
