Historical Context

The 1911 Parliament Act, passed on 10 August 1911 after H. H. Asquith threatened to flood the House of Lords with new peers, reduced the Lords’ veto to a two-year delay (approved by 131-114 votes). On 11 September 2026 MP Lauren Edwards invoked that same mechanism to bypass a Lords filibuster on the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill.
