In June 7 1981 Israel’s Air Force struck Iraq’s 40-megawatt Osirak reactor near Baghdad, a move ordered by Prime Minister Menachem Begin to halt Saddam Hussein’s nuclear ambitions. The attack, condemned by UN Security Council Resolution 487, set a precedent for pre-emptive strikes.
